In many GP practices, valuable time is wasted on check-ups that mainly revolve around a single measurement: blood pressure, weight or oxygen saturation. For the patient, this is often a quick procedure, but for the practice it still involves an appointment, a phone call or a home visit.
Digital healthcare should make this easier, but in practice it often creates extra work. Another app to use, another platform to navigate, and more explanations to give. Measurement results come in piecemeal via mobile phones, photos or manual entry, meaning the practice nurse still has to retype, check or follow up by phone.
ombrio works differently. Patients take measurements at home using devices from Tanita, Omron, Medisana or Withings. The practice determines in advance which patients will take part, which readings are relevant and when these should be submitted. The readings are then securely and automatically added to the patient’s record, without the need for manual entry.
This ensures that contact with patients is not lost, whilst freeing up time for those who genuinely require a consultation.

The readings are transmitted securely and automatically, so your team can review them as part of their existing workflow.
Digital healthcare only works if it fits in with your practice
An additional system or extra step does not save time. Home monitoring only becomes truly valuable when measurement data automatically integrates with your existing systems and workflows, responsibilities are clear, and the practice remains in control.
This is in line with the final-year research project by Tim de Haan (Erasmus University Rotterdam), carried out during his placement at Zorg en Zekerheid. GPs and practice nurses view home monitoring primarily as an alternative way of organising the care process. In their view, the added value arises when it actually simplifies or replaces existing tasks, thereby contributing to a more efficient use of available healthcare capacity.
Example: how can ombrio benefit your practice?
A concrete example illustrates the impact that a more efficient healthcare process can have.
At Keen GP Practice, around 2,000 patients receive home visits each year for routine measurements and check-ups. On average, there are three home visits per patient per year. Including travel time, carrying out the measurement, recording the results and administrative processing, each home visit takes an average of one hour.
This equates to approximately 6,000 hours of healthcare professionals’ time spent on routine measurements each year.
If half of these measurements can be carried out safely at home via ombrio , this results in a saving of approximately 3,000 hours of healthcare capacity per year. Given the average duration of a consultation, this means that the same capacity can be used for around 9,000 additional consultations at the practice. This creates more scope for complex care needs, shorter waiting times and a more efficient deployment of GPs and practice assistants, whilst vulnerable patients who require a physical home visit will, of course, continue to receive this care.
